What storms bring in is always welcomed by the birds that live at the seaside. Usually, its the Gulls that really profit from the food that is strewn along the beach after a storm. So, I was interested to see a flock of Oystercatchers on the rocky outcrop and along the shoreline on Exmouth beach in January between Maer Rocks and Orcombe Point. There were some Canada Geese too. However, they only have a certain amount of time to forage before the tide comes in again and the food is lost. So, I was frustrated to see that dog walkers were frightening the birds and chasing them away from their foraging. Even the rocky outcrop isn’t safe refuge for them as people and their dogs go out onto the rocks and then the birds have nowhere to rest.

Don’t think I’m against dogs, I love all animals! I just think there should be protected areas for wildlife and that an area set aside for birds without interference would be great.

Always a great pleasure to work with Med Theatre. This was a publicity photoshoot for an upcoming production – The Walk Dance Drama. The shoot took place on Dartmoor on a bright sunny day with lots of shadows and high contrast…usually a photographer’s nightmare! But this time the choice was deliberate – to photograph three young dancers with the sun casting shadows. Fabulous afternoon with lovely people. These are some previews of my favourite photographs.

The first performance will be at Bridford Woodland Trust Amphitheatre on August 1st at 4.00pm.

Another gloriously sunny day for the BBA boat launch in Lyme Regis for the Class of September 2014. The students of The Boat Building Academy launched eight boats on Wednesday 10th June, each built as part of their intensive 38 week training, into Lyme Regis harbour.

The boats were walked from the Academy’s workshops on Monmouth Beach to the slipway at Lyme Regis harbour, where champagne corks popped as the boats slid into the water for the first time. Gail McGarva (BEM) was there in her waders, as were friends and family of the students, Academy graduates, representatives from the marine press and industries and the people of Lyme Regis.

Boats launched were a 22’ Nordlands boat, 20’ Seabird Half Rater (the oldest one-design class boat still sailing), 15’2 Iain Oughtred ‘Whilly Tern’, 14’ faering, 13’ Iain Oughtred ‘Acorn Skiff’, 12’ Andrew Wolstenholme ‘Mallard’ dinghy, 18’ Guillemot ‘Night Heron’ kayak and the restoration of a 10’ traditional clinker dinghy named ‘Swallow’, believed to have been originally built by Naval apprentices.

Here are some previews of my favourites from the day. and this is a link to the main Gallery: June 2015 Launch

The photographic build diaries of each boat can be viewed here: Students diaries

How wonderful to be the photographer for The Med Theatre Dartmoor Shadow Puppets rehearsal. Such a lovely Theatre Company headed by Mark Beeson. I had never experienced a Shadow Puppet performance before and this dress rehearsal certainly didn’t disappoint! A JOURNEY, told through SHADOWS, inspired by DARTMOOR… The Walk shadow play has been adapted from a narrative poem by Dartmoor poet and playwright Mark Beeson. A solitary Dartmoor dweller is whisked away one night by a storm outside. In Wistman’s Woods he meets a stranger who offers to take him on a special journey; a journey that will lead him through the rivers, rocks and ruins of his memories and dreams. And one memory in particular will not leave him alone… For intergenerational audiences (aged 8+) and for lovers of poetry, puppetry and Dartmoor’s remarkable landscape. The remaining dates are:
Saturday 9th May: Belstone Village Hall
Friday 15th May: The Nicholls Hall, Lydford
Thursday 21st May: St Lawrence Chapel, Ashburton
